Children Looked After

What is the Virtual School for Children Looked After?

All Local Authorities have a statutory duty to promote the education of children in their care in accordance with Section 52 of the Children Act 2004.

In most cases this by means using a ‘Virtual School’, which organises the delivery of education by means of partners and agencies. The Virtual School service is applied in addition to attendance of a conventional school which is responsible for the child’s core academic achievements. The Virtual School enables pupils to narrow the gap between themselves and the general school population.

The Virtual School also monitors periods of exclusion and out of school hours activities. The resultant data is then used to support the commissioning of additional support or services where needed.
